The Scottish Printing Archival Trust was established in 1988 ‘to preserve and promote the heritage of Scotland’s printing industry’. It is unique in focusing on the history of the printing industry, rather than on print products (books, newspapers, posters etc) or on design and typography, and has an interest in all print sectors, including jobbing, securities, label production, packaging, and the allied industries of papermaking, type founding, machine and ink production. In November 2023, the Trustees decided to reflect this focus by changing to a revised ‘operating name’, Scotland’s Printing Heritage. The Trust itself and its charitable purposes remain the same.
The Trust works with institutions across Scotland to ensure that archives and artefacts are not lost, and has collection of trade literature and ephemera, held within the Edward Clark Collection at Edinburgh Napier University. The long-term aim of the Trust has always been to establish a significant display of printing machinery and artefacts in Scotland, and this campaign continues.
